Scotland win eight medals in five chaotic hours as Games hit halfway

Host nation Scotland won eight medals in the space of five chaotic hours on Wednesday - two of them gold - to take their Commonwealth Games tally in Glasgow to 23.

However, one of those golds might be lost after Para-athletics authorites decided to reun Melanie Woods' 1500m T54 final after an appeal.

The 31-year-old - who set a Games record in streaking to victory - will have to chance to win it back at Scotstoun on Friday.

But there were no such dramas for swimmers Angharad Evans and Keanna MacInnes, who both won an individual medal and a relay prize, and Toni Shaw, who also tasted success in the pool at Tollcross.

Not long after Woods' apparent success at Scotstoun, Stephen MacKenzie earned bronze in the field.

And at the SEC, both the men's 3x3 basketball team and their women's wheelchair equivalents ended the evening on the podium.

It takes Scotland's revised tally to 22 overall as the Games passes the halfway mark - eight gold and seven of both silver and bronze.

And it is the best return in a single day since nine were claimed on the last day of the Birmingham edition in 2022.

After a relatively quiet day, the first medal was claimed by the men's 3x3 basketball team just before 17:00 BST.

A couple of hours later, three more followed in the space of five minutes.

The women's wheelchair 3x3 basketball team took silver; Evans added her second gold - and third medal - of the Games in the 200m breaststroke; then Woods initially claimed gold in the women's T54 1500m.

Shaw then joined in with bronze in the women's S9 100m freestyle before MacInnes was edged into second place in the women's 200m butterfly to take her second individual silver of the meet.

Around the same time, MacKenzie was leaping to long jump bronze, before the haul was completed in the pool when Evans and MacInnes teamed up with Katie Shanahan and Evie Davis to take silver in the women's 4x100m medley.

Three more further medals are guaranteed in boxing - with fighters in semi-final action on Friday - while further prospects remain in athletics, bowls, cycling, judo and weightlifting.

And, of course, Woods could win her gold for a second time when her race is restaged.
