England win four boxing golds in Glasgow

England finished with four boxing gold medals after super heavyweight Damar Thomas added to wins by Sacha Hickey, Patris Mughalzai and Isaac Okoh earlier on Saturday.

It meant England finished second in the boxing medal table behind India, who won seven golds.

They had already equaled their record medal haul of 10 for a Commonwealth Games, but missed out on the seven golds needed to make this their most successful games.

Dimeji Shittu, Chantelle Reid and Ruby White lost their finals.

Thomas signed off the event by confidently beating Narender Berwal in the final fight of the competition.

“It feels great,“ he said. “Words can't explain it.”

Hickey beat Northern Ireland's Kaci Rock and then explained how she got into boxing by playing on an Nintendo Wii in her parents' living room.

"I felt I was in control of the fight," she said.

"I sparred with Kaci a few weeks ago and she is an amazing person, advocate for women in sport and someone I look up to."

Mughalzai, who was born in Russia but learned to box in London after moving to the UK as a toddler, beat Australia's Jacob Cassar.

"As soon as draw came out, I saw I had it hard. I think I have boxed all of the best kids here," said Mughalzai.

"Skills pay the bills."

Essex's Okoh, who like Hickey and Mughalzai won by unanimous decision, came through a tough tussle with Welshman Connor Williams and said he has "two eyes" fixed on winning an Olympic title in Los Angeles in 2028.

"It is the dream of all amateur boxers to win an Olympic medal," he said.

"We are the right route to getting there. I feel I am more than capable of doing it."

White, 19, who only progressed onto the senior Great Britain programme in May, came into the final on an eight-year unbeaten run stretching back to when she was 11 years old.

She was well beaten by a bigger, more experienced opponent in India’s Sakshi Chaudhary, however.

And though Reid is more experienced at 28, she was also comfortably beaten by India’s Arundhati Choudhary.
