The secret under Liverpool ONE

Hidden Merseyside

Available for over a year

Liverpool is a city that wears its history proudly. From its iconic waterfront to its grand Victorian buildings, reminders of the past are everywhere you look. But some of the city's most remarkable history isn't standing above you; it's hidden beneath your feet. If you've ever wandered through Liverpool ONE, you've walked directly over one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Britain's maritime history – Liverpool's Old Dock. Built in 1715, it was the world's first commercially successful enclosed wet dock, helping transform Liverpool into one of the world's great port cities. Today, visitors can descend below street level to stand alongside its original sandstone walls, which still rise more than 20 feet from the bed of the Pool, the tidal creek that gave Liverpool its name. It's a hidden piece of the city's story that now ranks among the world's top visitor attractions. To uncover more about this incredible glimpse into Liverpool's past, here's tour guide Stephanie Mitchard speaking with BBC's Tony Snell
