Wethersfield asylum seekers: What happens next?

Need To Know Essex

Available for over a year

Around six miles from Braintree sits the north Essex village of Wethersfield, once home to Reverend Patrick Brontë whose daughters are some of Britain’s most celebrated literary figures. During World War Two an RAF base opened in Wethersfield for Allied operations in occupied Europe, and since 2023 the military site has been used by the Home Office for asylum seeker accommodation, which had been expected to close next year. But all that is set to change, so what happens next? Picture credit: Carl Court/Getty Images.
