4. How to answer historical interpretations questions

Bitesize GCSE History

Available for over a year

Datshiane and Katie explore historical interpretations. Two people might agree about the evidence or basic facts of the same historical event, but they may disagree on how those events are viewed because they have different perspectives. For example, Elizabethan theatre may be exciting and dynamic for some people, but vulgar and trashy for others. In this episode, the focus is on how to answer interpretation-based questions effectively. The first step is understanding what an interpretation is—essentially, a historian’s explanation or view of an event. An important skill is being able to identify what historians are saying in their interpretations and recognising the different perspectives they may present. It's also important to consider why historians might have differing views on the same topic, as factors such as their background, the time period in which they wrote, or their approach to history can influence their conclusions. Finally, you'll be guided through how to evaluate the interpretations and whether they align with your own knowledge. Being able to compare the historian's viewpoint with what you know about the topic will help you assess its validity and provide a strong, well-informed response.
