Horsell Common, Surrey: Burial Rite for Muslim Soldiers

Woking’s Muslim Burial Ground is a reminder of the significant contribution made by the one million Indian service personnel who fought alongside the Allied troops during World War One. Indian soldiers wounded on the battlefields in France were treated back in England. Special hospitals were set up along the south coast and those who died received burial rights according to their religion. A cremation site was set up at Patcham for Hindu and Sikh soldiers, while Muslim soldiers were buried on Horsell Common near to the Shah Jehan Mosque.
