The Monkey Trial

Witness History

Available for over a year

Eighty-five years ago the small town of Dayton Tennessee was transformed by the Monkey Trial. Religion was pitted against science when a young teacher was tried for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution. Two of the most famous lawyers in America - William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow - battled it out in court and America was gripped. It began an argument over the teaching of evolution in schools which continues today.
