DJ, broadcaster, writer and dreamer Zakia Sewell provides the soundtrack to your dreams - playing music to ease the mind, soothe the soul, and open portals to new dimensions. Zakia celebrates Black British musical pioneers, icons and experimenters, from folk to punk and ambient, as part of the BBC’s The Music is Black season, in collaboration with the V&A East Museum. While 6 Music’s Rave Forever focuses on the dance floor every Friday in August, Zakia looks to the world of alternative music - with sounds by the likes of Fauzia, Coby Sey, Klein and Space Afrika, as well as some old favourites Labi Siffre, A. R. Kane, Jean Binta Breeze and Davy Graham. Plus we’ll hear from special guest Stephanie Phillips. Stephanie is an author and a musician, a member of Black feminist punk band Big Joanie, and part of the collective Decolonise Fest. Her new book We Were Here explores the history of Black people's participation in alternative music culture, and she joins us to shine a spotlight on some of the artists featured in the book, from Joan Armatrading to Poly Styrene. We want to hear your dreams! Send in tales of your sleepy adventures to dreamtime@bbc.co.uk or Whatsapp us on 03700 100 600 A Reduced Listening Production for BBC Radio 6 Music.
