Elizabeth Alker showcases the best performances by BBC orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe. The heart of today’s programme is a live concert from the players of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, at home in their Salford studio. Tom Fetherstonhaugh conducts Mayer’s Overture in D and the Symphony No. 2 by Brahms, part of a major focus this week on his symphonic music performed by our BBC Orchestras. We pay another visit to Hay on Wye for a double helping of Schubert, including the Carducci Quartet playing his early String Quartet in E flat. And we continue our focus this week on the superb Italian Baroque group Accademia Bizantina with a Vivaldi Violin Concerto performed last summer in Stockholm. 1pm Antonio Vivaldi Violin Concerto in E minor, RV 273 Alessandro Tampieri (violin) Accademia Bizantina Ottavio Dantone (harpsichord and director) Franz Schubert Impromptu in G flat major, Op. 90 No. 3 Charles Owen (piano) *** 1.30pm - Live concert from MediaCity, Salford Emilie Mayer Overture No. 4 in D minor Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Tom Fetherstonhaugh (conductor) *** Franz Schubert String Quartet in E flat major, D87 Carducci Quartet Lili Boulanger Introduction and Cortège Elena Urioste (violin) Tom Poster (piano) To listen to this programme (using most smart speakers), just say "Ask BBC Sounds to play Classical Live".
