Górecki's Symphony No. 3 performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony

Linton Stephens brings you an afternoon of exclusive music-making which includes a spotlight on the relationship between music and spirituality. As a centre piece, Górecki's Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) is performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Pawel Kapula. It is a meditative, slow-paced exploration of profound suffering, motherhood, and divine solace. Before that are excerpts from a concert by the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in which Haydn’s Seven Last Words on the Cross is interspersed with Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, juxtaposing Christ’s suffering with human grief and suggesting that art and religion may confer spiritual meaning on life. Margaret Bonds's Spiritual suite for piano: 3rd mvt; Troubled Water and Poulenc's Organ Concerto are also part of the programme. Elsewhere, there is chamber music recorded at the Crucible, Sheffield. Cellist Li-Wei Qin and pianist Jeremy Young join forces to play Beethoven's Sonata in D Op.102 No. 2, and pianists Ivana Gavric and Tim Horton perform Ravel's La valse.
