Presented live, from the Royal Festival Hall in London, by Martin Handley. Mark-Anthony Turnage: Three Screaming Popes Bela Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 1, Sz. 36, BB 48a -Interval- Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition Alina Ibragimova (violin) London Philharmonic Orchestra Edward Gardner (conductor) It's often said that a picture paints a thousand words, and tonight Edward Gardner takes to the helm of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Mussorgsky's fantastical depiction of a hut on hen’s legs flying through a fairytale forest in his Pictures at an Exhibition, while Mark Anthony Turnage's portrayal of three robed priests venting their pain and rage raises the curtain on this evening's concert. Russian-born violinist Alina Ibragimova is the soloist in a work that, composed on the brink of war, remained unperformed and unpublished during Bartók's composer's lifetime - his Violin Concerto no. 1.
