The comic book hero, Dan Dare - with his futuristic technology outflanking alien foes - was emblematic of the spirit of Britain in the 1950s and 60s. This was a period when Britain was re-inventing itself as a high-tech nation, bringing extraordinary innovation in design and industrial technology, including nuclear power, supersonic flight, radical rehousing programmes, exciting domestic appliances, and previously unheard-of consumer goods. A new exhibition at the Science Museum explores this era, revelling in the forward-thinking of the day.
Dan Dare & The Birth of Hi-Tech Britain is at the Science Museum in London from Wednesday 30 April until Sunday 25 Oct 2008.
