Sibling relationships

Does being the eldest or the youngest really shape your character? Datshiane Navanayagam talks to two writers putting sisters and brothers at the heart of their books.

Sibling relationships are often the longest we have in our lives. Sisters and brothers can evoke jealousy, irritation, love and laughter. They can also be enormously sustaining. Datshiane Navanayagam talks to two women from UK and Nigeria who've written about this fascinating family bond.

Bestselling Nigerian author Oyinkan Braithwaite has sisters at the heart of what she writes. Her award-winning debut novel, My Sister the Serial Killer features the classic duo of responsible older sister and wayward younger sibling. Her latest Cursed Daughters explores the impact of family history on generations of women. Oyinkan is one of four - she tells us about family dynamics growing up and why siblings prove such rich territory for fiction.

Catherine Carr is an award-winning podcast host, freelance presenter and the middle of three girls. Her book, Who's the Favourite? examines the research and the reality of these messy relationships: loving and supportive, or full of rivalry and conflict - or both.
