Elections underway in Angola

Reports and analysis of the day's political, economic and sports news from across Africa.

Voters in oil-rich Angola are heading for an historic change in an election marking the end of President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos' 38-year reign. His 63-year-old defence minister Joao Lourenco, a quiet man more used to the army barracks and the closed doors of party politics than the public spotlight, is standing for the governing MPLA party.

Plus, Egypt has protested a US decision to withhold some military aid, as a US delegation including presidential advisor Jared Kushner is in Cairo for meetings on the Middle East process. Professor Shibley Telhami, the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland, adds his analysis.
