Ruth Ramage, Forensic Scientist
Ruth didn’t set out to find a job as a forensic scientist but after 27 years working in the forensics field she is glad she did.
She started her career in the drugs section of the Strathclyde Police Forensic Science laboratory before progressing to work in the general chemistry section where her focus was on evidence such as footwear marks, tool mark comparisons, fire debris analysis and paint and glass analysis.
Working the on-call rota for more than 20 years has meant Ruth has attended numerous crime scenes ranging from fire investigations and terrorist incidents to murders and attempted murders. She has had to face many disturbing and emotional scenes as part of her role and is wary of the portrayal of her role by forensic TV dramas which glamorise the job of a Forensic Scientist – something that Ruth considers to be far from reality. The real difficulties that scientists face are apparent when Ruth returns to visit the scene of the Kriss Donald murder.
Now as Team Leader for the Chemistry and Documents team Ruth has the responsibility of managing a team of 15 experts making sure that they are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.
