How Horsforth helped win the war

The West Yorkshire village whose war fundraising effort linked it to the capture of vital German Enigma codebooks.

The chairman of Horsforth Historical Village Society, Nick Holmes, tells the story of how a village raised an enormous sum of money for the war effort. That local effort fed into a much bigger story when HMS Aubrietia helped force U 110 to the surface in 1941, leading to the capture of Enigma material. Decades later, a Hollywood film wrongly credited Americans with that breakthrough. In response, campaigners in Horsforth wrote to the US President, prompting a reply from Bill Clinton acknowledging both the Royal Navy and Horsforth's role.
