What is the history to St Patrick's Day?

It's the seventeenth of March - Saint Patrick's Day!

For many of us - it's a good excuse to have a drink and a party. But it's also a date steeped in history and tradition.

Saint Patrick himself was born in Roman times - most likely in Wales, or maybe northern England, or possibly Scotland. But definitely NOT in Ireland.
