Actress Sally Hughes: ‘My favourite fictional Londoner is Pongo!’

This Listed Londoner tells Robert why a pair of Dalmatians represent the city for her.

Sally Hughes is a theatre actor and director, best known as the long‑standing Artistic Director of The Mill at Sonning, the UK’s only dinner theatre.

Sally was born in Carshalton but grew up in South America, only moving back to London when she was 15. She went to drama school in south Kensington, after which she performed mostly in theatre productions. She was married to the late director Alvin Rakoff, who became a Listed Londoner himself a few years ago.

Sally has been the managing director of the Mill for 43 years. It was founded by her parents, who purchased a derelict 18th‑century watermill and undertook a major restoration to convert it. The venue opened in July 1982.

Sally Hughes reveals her favourite haunts, memories, pet hates and everything in between with Robert Elms.
