What makes this Beatles record so rare?

A rare early Beatles single with a glaring spelling error has been up for sale in Chelmsford.

The 1962 demo record of the band’s first hit, Love Me Do, was one of a batch of 250 which had Paul McCartney’s surname spelt incorrectly as ‘McArtney’.

It was expected to fetch between £7,000 and £9,000 at auction – but it failed to reach the threshold at the sale held by Stacey’s Auctioneers and Valuers.

However, an undisclosed offer near the lower reserve price was accepted after the auction.

Auctioneer David McGregor says it’s a unique piece of music history.
