Josie Field's BBC Music Introducing session
The Alvechurch musician performs an exclusive session at our Virtual Nozstock takeover.
An artist who mixes blues, folk, country, jazz and strong elements of soul to create her innovative sound, Josie Field is no ordinary singer-songwriter.
Moving to Alvechurch, near Redditch, just before the pandemic, Josie formerly resided in South Africa before relocating to the UK.
Having been nominated for nine South African Music Awards over her last five releases, there’s certainly no slowing down this performer.
Recommended to us by the people who run the Worcester Music Festival, Josie’s indie-soul music draws comparison to artists such as Florence and the Machine, Janis Ian and Aretha Franklin.
Her talents don’t just stop at music, though - when she’s not songwriting, she’s also teaches yoga and can regularly be seen on her socials practising on top of the narrow boat she lives on!
**How was it recorded?**
The stages at Nozstock are permanent and well away from any public right of way. With no pre-publicity, we risked no audience gathering and ensured all acts were six or less (even though the rules say “workers” can be groups of more than six). Nozstock normally takes place in July, so nobody expected anything to be happening on that site in October (and the site is owned by the farmer who puts on the event).
Acts arrived on-the-hour, every hour, in separate vehicles and were called forward, had their hands sanitised and checked in with Nozstock's own Test & Trace QR code.
Whoever had to handle the equipment was the person providing it – so there were no back lines and mics/stands/cables were provided by the band. Once they were set up, the band left the stage and Andrew (the only person from the BBC) then mic’d up the guitars, drums and fed the stage monitors (while wearing a face mask!). The stages were marked two metres apart – and, after the bands used their own mics for an interview, they got back into their vehicles and left. A couple of people from Nozstock then sanitised the whole stage before telling the next group it was safe to leave their vehicle and set up. Any band members wanting to watch/listen to the performance would have to virtually.
To keep staffing to an absolute minimum, these sessions were audio mixed and video edited remotely.
