A history of celebrating 'safe and bland' music
Cultural historian Peter Doggett said society's and the establishment's rejection of 'edgy' music has been going on for more than a century, from ragtime, to jazz, to rock and roll and now hip-hop and grime today.
Voting for the Brit Awards starts next week but not one of the nominees is from the hip hop or grime genres, leading to criticism that it doesn't showcase black British talent.
