'Rail fares increase funding billions of pounds of investment'
Average rail fares will rise by 2.2% from 2 January, the rail industry has said, marking the lowest rise for five years.
Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, told Today's John Humphrys: "season tickets will be going up, on average by 2.5%"
"That is paying for billions of pounds of investment in the industry."
When asked if fares could start coming down over the next few years, he claimed "that's a decision for government."
