Old Sarum archaeologist reveals plan of medieval city

Archaeologists from the University of Southampton have used the latest archaeological surveying techniques to create a detailed plan of an 11th century medieval city at Old Sarum, near Salisbury.

Kristian Strutt, from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton, told Today's Sarah Montague: "We used a series of techniques ...across the site to try and work out what was under the ground without actually excavating."

He explained that the medieval city "started life as an Iron Age hill fort" before the earth work of the site was "used in the middle ages ...as a modern bailey castle."

The survey has been carried out by using non-invasive technologies including magnetometry, electric resistivity tomography and radars.
