Exeter 16 and 17
Six metres below the streets of Exeter are passageways dating back to the 1340s, which Christina explores by torchlight with historian Professor Mark Stoyle.
Christina Trevanion goes underground to explore medieval passageways beneath Exeter city centre. In the company of historian Professor Mark Stoyle, she learns how 425 metres of tunnels were built over water pipes to bring clean water to the city’s people in the 1300s.
Above ground, four teams shop for treasures at a huge antiques fair on the outskirts of Exeter. The red teams are firefighters Steve and Andrew, and friends Tricia and Debbie, all skippered by expert Richard Madley. Their opponents in blue are sales assistants Jack and Shaun, and friends Tony and Danny, guided by expert Ben Cooper.
A flock of geese decoys stops Steve and Andrew in their tracks, but the price is sky high, so they walk on by. Meanwhile, Tony and Danny spot a set of bagpipes, but it’s too much of a squeeze on their budget.
With their shopping bags full, the teams travel to nearby Hele in north Devon, where auctioneer Adam Partridge is on the rostrum selling them to the highest bidder.
