When a dying man on a Welsh beach leaves vicar's son Bobby Jones with a strange message, he thinks nothing of it. Until someone poisons him. Then his childhood friend Lady Frances "Frankie" Derwent turns up. Frankie's bored of London and convinced there's a mystery to solve, so (with Bobby in series of extravagant disguises) they head off to Hampshire to uncover a murderous conspiracy. Frankie is charming, carefree and irresponsible, Bobby a natural worrier blessed with a good heart. They make an unlikely duo but eventually they solve the mystery and fall for each other.
