Am I enough? Am I performing well enough?

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Haydon Spenceley.

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Haydon Spenceley

Good morning.

As I get older, I find that week’s play tricks on me. They seem to be able to both speed up and slow down at the same time. When I need or want more time, it disappears rapidly. When I, on rare occasions, find myself wishing that time would speed up so the working day would come to an end (do others do this too?), the clock never seems to move at the speed I want it to. There always seems to be more work to do than there is time for. I’m especially feeling that at the moment. At times like this I can get anxious and uncertain. Am I enough? Am I performing well enough? Will I be frustrating to others? That’s one thing I certainly don’t want to be. But whatever happens, however much I get done today and however it all goes, I am enough.

I am enough because I am loved and held in the arms of God who gave me life and breath and gave his life for me. I cannot make myself more than that and it is a waste of energy and effort trying. That is so freeing. I can rest in the arms of love today. What a gift. I find myself hoping that other people, perhaps those listening to this, will experience something of that freeing, saving love today for the first time and would experience the change of life that has been gifted to me and is offered to us all.

Father, thank you for your gift of life and love. Help us to accept it today. You love us and that is so wonderful. Thank you.

Amen.
