Lowry's revelation

Spiritual reflection to start the day with writer and broadcaster, Fiona Stewart.

Good morning. Years ago I went to an exhibition of the work of the Manchester artist, LS Lowry. I found myself captivated by one of his paintings.

Like much of Lowry’s work, the picture depicts a Northern factory gate, and a crowd of people gathered outside it. In the centre, facing outwards, is a man on crutches. At first it appears that he alone has a disability, but as you study the picture, it becomes apparent that every figure has a problem or deformity. Lowry is making a social comment, drawing attention to the poverty and brokenness of his age.

What drew me to the painting was the beauty and individuality on display. Each figure has personality and agency. There are groups of people talking, some fighting, others just getting on with life.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, the writer draws our attention to the beauty and brokenness of humanity.

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

The writer is drawing our attention to a theological truth, that every human being is made in the image of God, created with capacity for love, connection and purpose. The challenge is to notice and celebrate this individuality amidst the brokenness, to see the image of God in others.

Father God, Open our eyes to see your image in those around us. Thank you that you have set eternity in all of our hearts. Amen
