Seraphic Light

Jennifer Lucy Allan celebrates John Coltrane’s musical legacy in the week of what would have been his 100th birthday; plus the usual offering of new adventurous music.

Jennifer Lucy Allan celebrates John Coltrane’s musical legacy in the week of what would have been his 100th birthday. A colossal figure in the history of jazz saxophone, Coltrane’s virtuosic improvisational approach and the boldness of his harmonic innovations changed the genre forever. Late Junction looks at how he reshaped the sound of jazz and the ways in which other artists have interpreted and experimented with his work. Plus: a never-before-heard track from the Coltrane vaults, released to mark the centenary.

And, on the eve of Radio 3’s Where the Light Sings - a musical celebration inspired by the lighthouses that mark the UK’s shores - we take a trip along coastal paths less trodden to encounter the sound of foghorns, field recordings and experimental compositions including Alvin Curran's Maritime Rites, recently re-issued by Blume Editions. Plus: oddball crooners and vocal experimentation galore from a clutch of underground labels, including Stroom in Belgium, Regional Bears in Stockport, and Nyahh Records in Ireland.
