Proud
For 14 years, Kyra believed her parents couldn't accept her sexuality. One conversation changes everything. A story about family, assumptions, love and finally hearing the truth.
Kyra decides, after 14 years, it’s time to have a conversation with her Caribbean Christian family about her sexuality. Expecting a difficult discussion, and fearing rejection, she instead uncovers a story of misunderstanding, unspoken love, and acceptance. Through honest conversations, personal reflection on all sides, this programme explores identity, family and the power of communication to heal old wounds.
Each year New Storytellers presents the work of new audio feature makers and "Proud", produced by Kyra Edwards Belgrave a student at the University of West London, was one of the winners of the Charles Parker Prize 2026. The judging panel - consisting of producers, critics and commissioners – appreciated “being taken right into the heart of a family life not often represented in mainstream audio” in a series of “heart-warming conversations, funny, lively; and the contributors speak so honestly and openly about the pressures of religion and culture - I really liked this.”
