Episode 4
Natalie’s halfway through her college course and growing in confidence. On placement, she meets home carer Gary, who looks after his partner, Lisa.
Natalie has reached the halfway point in her time at college. She’s more confident than she was but still very much learning as she goes, and this week brings some real eye-openers.
In the college’s mock ward, she’s working with visiting occupational therapists from Bedford Hospital. Everything is hands-on, with equipment that feels very close to real NHS practice, including hoists used for moving patients safely. Natalie gets fully involved, including taking on the role of a grumpy patient during a practical exercise, using her acting skills and bringing a bit of humour into the class.
Tilly, one of her classmates, talks about her experience at home. She’s been a young carer since childhood, supporting her mum who lives with advanced MS. She’s confident with the equipment and clearly used to responsibility far beyond her years. Natalie is taken aback by just how much she’s been managing for so long.
In Belfast, we meet a different kind of support system - an aquacise class for people living with Parkinson’s disease and their carers. The class, an important time for connection, was founded by William, who developed Parkinson’s in his 40s after years as a swim coach.
Back home, Natalie meets up with her EastEnders pal Kitty Castledine, who talks openly about life using a wheelchair since childhood. It’s an honest chat that gives Natalie a clearer sense of the everyday realities and barriers that come with accessibility.
Flying solo without a professional to shadow, Natalie's next placement takes her into the home of Lisa, who has multiple sclerosis, and her partner, Gary, who cares for her. It’s an insight into everyday life shaped by care and support, including time spent at a local MS therapy centre. What stands out for Natalie is the partnership between them and how care is shared day to day. Thinking about her own relationship with Marc, emotions get the better of her.
