Cerys hosts your Sunday sonic and cultural adventure, with a session from Algerian-French singer Souad Massi and a look at the folk tradition of stone lifting with author David Keohan, known online as “Indiana Stones”.
Souad Massi is an Algerian-French singer-songwriter from Algiers, known for blending North African folk traditions with acoustic folk, chaâbi, rock and chanson. She recently released her latest album Zagate. The album is described as one of her most direct and politically charged works to date, responding to conflict, instability and the wider state of the world.
David Keohan is an Irish author, stone-lifter and world kettlebell lifting champion. He joins us to talk about his debut book The Wind Beneath the Stone: My Quest to Unearth a Piece of Ireland’s Folklore. The book documents Keohan’s journey across Ireland and parts of Scotland to rediscover the nearly forgotten folk tradition of stone lifting. What begins as a personal fitness challenge gradually becomes a wider exploration of Irish folklore, masculinity, community, landscape and cultural memory.
