Michael begins in the coastal city of Kanazawa, where he goes behind the scenes of the Shinkansen operation to join the cleaning detail who service the trains at breakneck speed. He then heads to a vast Shinkansen depot filled with iconic trains.
At Kanazawa Castle, Michael discovers the history of the Maeda family, one of the most important and powerful samurai clans in Japanese history. Their love of the arts has left a lasting legacy of craftsmanship in the city.
To finish the day, Michael travels to Kurobe to ride the exhilarating Kurobe Gorge railway, a narrow gauge mountain line which snakes along one of Japan’s steepest gorges.
