Katya visits Italy and Germany to explore how they’re changing in the turbulent new world.

At Siena’s famous Palio horse race, Katya gets the rare opportunity to join one of the city’s contrade, or local neighbourhoods, on the eve of the race, which proves surprisingly relevant to understanding how Italy works. Nearby, in the Tuscan hills, she joins Italian paratroopers on a Nato exercise with 1,500 soldiers from seven different countries.

Then she travels to Germany, where she visits Volkswagen’s car factory to learn how they’re being affected by both Russia and China. And in Germany’s far south, not far from Munich, she meets Christian Klaus and his family, who are building a house with a nuclear bunker.
