Episode 1
It’s spring, and that means one thing - lambing time. Due to heavy rain, it’s not long before problems start piling up.
Jane’s farm is nestled amongst the Antrim Hills in the small townland of Shilnavogie, a place steeped in Ulster-Scots culture and traditions. It’s spring, and that means one thing - lambing time. Due to heavy rain, it’s not long before problems start piling up.
Jane’s family have farmed this land for generations, but the place where she’s discovered her niche is in the polytunnel she began restoring three years ago. It’s home to fruit like raspberries and figs, and a range of plants, including peonies, lavender and eucalyptus, but today’s job is to tame the strawberries ahead of the summer glut, and then plant out some gourds and potatoes – or, as they’re known in this part of the country, prootas.
After an inspiring visit to Glenarm Castle walled garden, Jane shows how to make a floral display without breaking the bank by bulking up with common plants and greenery found growing around homes and hedgerows. Jane also pays a visit to Ballycastle to meet writer and baker Ciara O’Hart, and forage for wild garlic.
Back on the farm, Jane marks the end of the lambing season by using the foraged wild garlic and beef reared on the farm to knock up a family feast.
