3. Being the First Part of the history of Sir Conolly Rackrent

Sir 'Condy' Rackrent is an utterly feckless landlord. Faithful castle retainer Old Thady recalls his family service. Read by Cyril Cusack.

Ireland. Old Thady has served under four disastrous generations of the Rackrents:

* Sir Patrick drinks
* Sir Murtagh litigates
* Sir Kit gambles
* Sir Condy (Sir Connolly) merely fritters away the family fortunes

Yet he is still the ever-faithful retainer at the bankrupt Castle Rackrent.

Being the first part of the history of Sir Conolly Rackrent - Sir 'Condy' is Old Thady's favourite Rackrent - a good-natured, overly generous and utterly feckless landlord.

Maria Edgeworth's satire on Anglo-Irish landlords, first published in 1800.

Abridged by John Scotney.

Read by Cyril Cusack.

Producer: Jeremy Howe
