Drumhead Service

Live coverage of the drumhead service from Edinburgh Castle marking the centenary of the start of WWI and the launch of commemorative events across Scotland.

Live coverage from Edinburgh Castle. One hundred years since the start of World War I, the drumhead service launches commemorative events across Scotland. The British Armed Forces are represented along with veterans organisations and guests from across the country. Based on military tradition, a drumhead service is a religious service conducted in the field during conflict and in peacetime, with neatly-piled drums draped with flags creating a makeshift altar. Organised by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the service is supported by pipe and drum bands drawn from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth along with selected choirs.
