Name the Somerset Dragon

Somerset Day is back on May 11 2026 – and this year we’ve giving you the chance to make a piece of Somerset history.

Last year, BBC Radio Somerset celebrated the occasion by putting Somerset on the map as we flew the county’s flag across the world.
Our presenters got it flying far and wide with the flag lighting up Times Square in New York and closer to home, Glastonbury Tor. Alongside appearances at the Miami F1, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even in the Gambia.
This year to celebrate Somerset Day on May 11, we’re giving you the chance to ‘Name the Somerset Dragon’ – the iconic emblem on our county’s flag.
We’re not looking to name the Dragon after a living person, nor can it be named after an organisation. So get your thinking caps on, be creative and suggest a (sensible!) name.
Perhaps you want to take inspiration from Somerset’s myths and legends? Maybe there’s an important character from Somerset’s past who you think should be recognised?
You can suggest a name now by completing this short form by 09:30 on Monday 20 April 2026.
Click here for our terms and conditions and privacy notice.
A team of judges will then review the names and draw up a shortlist. If you are behind one of the shortlisted names, we may be back in touch to feature you and your suggestion on air ahead of the shortlist going to a public vote.
The winning name will then be announced on BBC Radio Somerset on Somerset Day.
