Thomas Keneally looks ahead as he writes into his 90s
Rachel Naylor from the Witness History team has made a new documentary about the Schindler’s List author Thomas Keneally.
The Booker Prize-winning writer is still looking forward, even as he reflects on a long and celebrated career.

In Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Thomas welcomes Rachel into his home to offer a glimpse of his writing life today. From his base in Manly, a seaside suburb known for its ferry routes and surfing culture, the 90‑year-old continues to work despite recent ill health.
Thomas takes Rachel on a drive through his neighbourhood, pointing out local landmarks and sharing his affection for the Sea Eagles rugby league team. The pair also visit North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park, where he regularly walks, navigating rough terrain, wetlands and wildlife while taking in inspirational coastal views.

Best known for Schindler’s Ark, which won the Booker Prize in 1982 and inspired the Oscar-winning film Schindler’s List, Thomas has written more than 50 books across his career. He reflects on the highs and setbacks of a life in writing, including his first rejection and periods of self-doubt.
He also speaks openly about ageing and health struggles, admitting that he sometimes feels adrift. Yet his focus remains firmly on the future. Keneally says he is considering retirement but has set himself a personal challenge: to produce the best book ever written by someone over the age of 90.
This episode of In The Studio paints a picture of a writer still deeply engaged with his craft, balancing reflection with ambition.
