Caves under Rock City

Take our audio, video and photo tours of Rock City's labyrinth of caves.

The Caves of Nottingham are a well known tourist attraction; however fewer people know that there are hidden networks of caves that extend all over the city.

One of these networks can be accessed beneath Rock City.

Virtual tour of the caves

Walking through the beer cellar of this legendary venue you'll find a dusty brick staircase which leads down into the system of man made caves.

Slowly the artificial light dims and a couple of flights of stairs later you are in complete darkness surrounded by solid rock and debris which has built up over decades.

As you first walk in there are various picture prints scattered on the floor of legendary performers such as Louis Armstrong although its wishful thinking to believe the caves could possibly have seen musical performances in the past.

It's easy to get lost in this maze of caves that all look very similar and are characterised by dead ends and passage ways that lead back on themselves.

If you look closely at the walls you can see the marks where the rock has been chipped almost with a blunt instrument and the tunnels excavated bit by bit.

Several of the passageways have also been blocked off either by falling rubble or concrete to conceal parts of the cave system.

The network leads from under Rock City all the way out under the car park.

In the past however, it was possible from this gateway to join a network of caves that reached all the way under Nottingham right up to the train station and beyond.
