Severn Trent is Britain's second largest listed water firm. It's recently seen its annual profits rise by 18% to reach £270m. But it has one of the worst reputations for leaking pipes. Every day Severn Trent, which provides water for Nottinghamshire households, loses more than 500 million litres of water - that's the equivalent of 200 Olympic size swimming pools. | | Help us plot Nottinghamshire's leaks |
The firm spends £25 million a year on pipe repairs and renewal and claims to lay six miles of new pipe every week. At least one third of their pipes have been replaced in the past ten years. Despite this the Consumer Council for Water in the Midlands has reported a 50% increase in complaints in the past year. Many of these concern the response times of Severn Trent when leaks are reported. Customers have highlighted instances where it's taken 12 weeks for a leak to be fixed. How bad is the leak situation in Nottinghamshire? We asked you to help us build up a map of leaks in the county in one week (Monday, 10th - Friday, 14th July 2006). We asked you to inform us of any mains pipe leak or an outside pipe that hasn't been fixed for several weeks. We then plotted it on a map to help determine whether there really is a leaks crisis in Notts. See the map above to draw your own conclusions. Click 'Next' to see our reported leaks...
