Artists' QuarterYou are in: North Yorkshire > Entertainment > The Arts > Artists' Quarter > Artist: Ian Scott Massie ![]() Ian Scott Massie Artist: Ian Scott MassieThe landscapes and architecture of North Yorkshire feature in Ian's bold and colourful paintings. He tells us what inspires him... My artistic roots lie in the the visual style and philosophy of artists such as Paul Nash and John Piper and I try to portray the personality of the landscape and architecture of Yorkshire. I live in Masham in Wensleydale where The Gallery is the main outlet for my work. ![]() Detail: Fountains Abbey I am currently working on one of the biggest projects of my career - painting Fountains Abbey and the park of Studley Royal. Over the last few years I have tackled a number of major subjects: Masham Market Place, the buildings of York and a portrait of the town of Richmond. The Fountains exhibition is to be held in Fountains Hall in August 2009. The idea for the exhibition has been developing for some time ever since I was involved in a group exhibition at Fountains Hall in the 1990s. ![]() Detail: West door, York Minster For my last exhibition I launched an on-line catalogue so that people unable to get to the exhibition were still able to enjoy the paintings, and I have now taken this idea a step further: For me part of the enjoyment of creating a body of paintings is seeing how the pictures come to be. I thought it would be nice to share this with others, so I am publishing a blog showing the progress of this, and other projects I am working on. By visiting and subscribing to the blog anyone interested can see the photographs and sketches which lead to the finished painting and, I hope, will be able to understand how an artist works.
