Going solo

As a single woman, Carole from York can find plenty of things to do and places to go. But the one thing that is proving difficult is going on holiday. Not fancying holidaying alone she discovered there is hope for single travellers...

But the one thing she can't face doing alone is going on holiday. But luckily she doesn't need to...

Holidays! Something most of us look forward to, whether it’s sunning on a beach somewhere, sightseeing, fulfilling long held dreams or simply slobbing out at home!

But, what about those of us who are single? That’s me I’m afraid. I was widowed six years ago at 39 and although I’ve had some great holidays with my son, my best friend and my family, I want to do something for me.

"I know that I really need to get out of my comfort zone and ‘have an adventure’. But how and where?"

Anyone who is single for whatever reason knows how hard it can be to walk into a pub, bar or restaurant on their own, so how on earth could I consider going on holiday on my own? It seemed an impossible task.

Another reason for considering holidaying alone is to extend my social circle. I have lots of friends, but most of them are married, and certainly don’t want to come on holiday with me!

I’ve been rolling all this around in my mind for a year or so now. I know that I really need to get out of my comfort zone and ‘have an adventure’. But how and where?

Sitting at home one evening, I was having a half hearted trawl through the internet when I came across a travel company which specialises in holidays for single travellers. On further investigation I found there were lots of them out there – bingo!

It’s still a big thing though, to consider going on holiday on your own, even with other like minded people (you hope). I sent off for some brochures and when they dropped through the letterbox I read them from cover to cover.

What a revelation, you can go anywhere and do anything, from black tie balls in the UK, to walking and trekking all over the world. There’s sun and sea, cruises, safaris. You name it, it’s there and all for single travellers.

One of the companies was holding an introduction evening in Leeds in May. With nothing to lose, off I went. I was amazed, there were around 40 people there, mostly around my age and all as nervous as me.

We were all reassured by the rep that these holidays were not just a cover for finding a partner, but were just a way for single people to enjoy a fantastic holiday.

It all sounds really interesting and I think I might be tempted, but before I jump in with both feet and book that Nile Cruise (that’s what I really fancy doing!) I’ve booked myself on a ‘Newcomers weekend’ in Lincolnshire in September. Just two nights in a posh hotel, with dinner, dancing and a bit of sightseeing. That should give me a taste of what it’s like to holiday alone.

Watch this space and I’ll let you know how I get on!

I've travelled alone as far afield as Australia but had relatives at that end to meet up with. However, I want to see Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon. There will be no relatives to greet me and would really like to meet like minded travellers who are retired but still young at heart.

Last year I travelled to Berlin on my own. During the day I was busy visiting places and travelling around the city and environs that I did not have chance to feel lonely. Sometimes in the evenings I would have liked someone to talk to. I speak German so I was prepared for anything untoward. In August I shall be visiting Munich.

Travelling alone to far off places especially can be daunting for a single woman when you hear horror stories on the news. I too am single and only recently travelled to channel islands which is the furtherest i have been by myself on first time ive travelled alone abroad on holiday by myself and disappointingly found when i holidayed alone as a single person had to have a small cramped single one bed room unfortunately though would have prefered a spacious double-room though that would have been more costly and what irritates me is that a lot of coach tours/trips if you dont drive a car well some holiday accommodation doesnt have single supplements which is wrong as there are lots of people who travel alone people divorced, single, widowed etc and they should make allowances for these. When i travelled to Jersey alone it was great and found otherholiday makers very friendly and some dont understand that these days in this day and age women do travel alone all over the place having a break from university or whatever and just want to see more of the world not everyone wants to travel with someone as travelling alone is grreat as you can please yourself what you want to do and where you want to go and you dont have to concern yourself with someone elses needs and can totally relax and as ive never been to Isle of White and dont have a passport may go there next year or perhaps go to Iceland/Switzerland or Spain etc if i get a passport and i strongly recommend it to anyone as i feel its great to be independant and to travel
