Top of the league thriller

By Ron Gridley
Harrogate & District Junior League, Sunday 19th November 2006

  • Ilkley 'A' 5 v 2 Pannal 'A'
  • Ilkley 'B' 2 v 4 Pannal 'B'
  • Ilkley 'A' 1 v 1 Pannal Sports 'B'
  • Ilkley 'B' 0 v 4 Pannal sports 'A'.

Pannal's problems started with not being able to pull a full squad together due to illness which meant some of the boys playing out of their original positions. They had to win to stand any chance of improving their climb up the table.

Each team had a tough two games ahead of them and all the training they had done was vital.

First games: Pannal B Team won 4 - 2. Four goals from striker Tom and current player of the year with good work from Oliver and the tireless James a changed defence of Brandon and Jack both playing out of position coped with most of what Ilkley could throw at them.

Pannal A team lost 5 - 2. Oliver and Max scoring two outstanding goals. Playing good football, lead 2 - 0 against a strong Ilkley A team, two deflected goals against the run of play saw Ilkley take control and end up the winners. Knowing that Ilkley could be beaten, Pannal pushed for extra points in the second game.

Second games: Pannal B team fought out a 1 - 1 draw. Conceded early under heavy pressure they were kept in the game by some great saves from goalkeeper Lewis.

Tom equalised early in the second half and every player fought hard to try and score the crucial goal that was needed. Pannal A tean won 4 - 0. Flowing football created numerous chances one goal from Max and a hat-trick from Johnny. Another solid display by goalkeeper Aiden.

Players of the match for Pannal were Jack and Max. An excellent result and vital points for Pannal Sports under 11s and looking forward to their next match against Leeds Maccabi.
