Horse riding is often talked about as being therapeutic and the Follifoot Park Riding Centre, based near Harrogate, offers a fantastic range of classes, courses and activities that cater to children of all ages and abilities. One particularly important aspect of their work in the community is their disabled riding group. On a recent visit, BBC Radio York's Andrew Holland and Dougie Weake saw just how important this disabled riding group is to those children who benefit most. The sheer joy and laughter that was visible to see from everybody involved shows that spending time with the horses and being given the opportunity to ride one in the open air (preferably on a sunny day, of course!) really has a positive impact on both their physical and mental wellbeing. But it doesn't end there; the centre has a state-of-the-art horse riding simulator which replicates the experience of riding a horse, but all in the safety and comfort of the indoor environment. After getting together the money to pay for this amazing machine, the centre now has a great way to introduce the children to horse riding without them leaving the building. It builds confidence and ensures that the first real ride will be as smooth as possible. Although the centre continues to provide this fantastic service, it really couldn't continue without the work of volunteers. There are a huge number of different roles available and even if you can only spare a little time, it is sure to be much appreciated. You could go along and help out with the rides, organise the trips or muck down and help with the clearing out. It might not sound the most glamorous of jobs, but if you love the outdoors and like being around horses, we're sure you'll be very happy! BBC Radio York's Interaction would love to put you in touch with the Follifoot Park Riding Centre - they'll have details of all the latest volunteering opportunities and will talk you through what is required. You can call BBC Radio York's Interaction on 0845 366 1066 where we'll be happy to give you details of the opportunities available. Alternatively, why not drop us an email and we'll happily pass on your details - who knows, you might be riding off into the sunset sooner than you think! |
