General FeaturesYou are in: Norfolk > Features > General Features > Norwich set to run the Sport Relief Mile ![]() Sport Relief Mile in heart of Norwich Norwich set to run the Sport Relief MileFor the first time Norwich is hosting a flagship Sport Relief Mile. On Sunday, 16 March, 2008 runners of all ages and abilities will take on the one, three or six mile challenge in aid of good causes in the UK and around the world. The streets of Norwich will host up to 2,500 runners on Sunday, 16 March all raising money for good causes as part of Sport Relief 2008. It's one of 23 flagship miles going on across the UK, with more than 200 events taking place in total. There are still a limited number of places on the Norwich mile up for grabs via the Sport Relief website. BBC Radio Norfolk presenters Stephen Bumfrey and Nicky Price will lead the runners, starting at 0900 GMT, from outside City Hall. Road closuresA number of roads will be closed in the city centre due to the event. St Peters Street, Gaol Hill, Exchange Street, Gentleman's Walk, Rampant Horse Street, Malthouse Road, Chantry Road and Chapelfield East will experience full-closure from 0500 to 1500 GMT. Bethel Street will be closed beyond The Forum car park entrance, while Theatre Street will be closed up to Chapelfield Gardens with all Westlegate traffic turning right onto Red Lion Street. Since it's inception in 2002 Sport Relief has raised nearly £50m which has been distributed in the UK and in some of the world's poorest countries. Local projects to have benefited include St Edmund's Society, a group which uses sport to help young homeless people get fit and focused, and the Green Canaries Wheelchair Basketball project.
