Minecraft Movie 2: What we know so far about the sequel

If you love 'La-la-la-lava, ch-ch-ch-chicken' or yelling 'Chicken Jockey!' Then you'll be pleased to know that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie is on its way.
That's right, Mojang - the makers of the Minecraft game - and Warner Bros Pictures, have confirmed that a second movie will be heading to the big screens soon.
The first movie was released in 2025 and was a huge success, making almost $1 billion in cinema sales world wide.
But what will the second movie be about; when will it be released, and who is in it?

When will A Minecraft Movie 2 be released?

A Minecraft Movie 2 will be released on 23 July 2027.
However, sometimes movie release dates can change depending on any delays that can happen during the making of a movie.
The movie's director Jared Hess said that filming for the sequel would start around April 2026 in New Zealand.
Who will be in a Minecraft Movie 2?

The main cast from the first movie are likely to return, meaning that Steve (played by Jack Black) Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) will be back.
It has also just been announced that actress Kirsten Dunst (who played Mary-Jane in the Spiderman 2002 movie) will be playing Alex in the new Minecraft movie.
Alex was introduced into the Minecraft games in 2014, and was the first female default character skin available to players, alongside Steve.
She has ginger hair and wears a green t-shirt and brown trousers.
In a post-credit scene at the end of the first Minecraft Movie, Alex knocks on Steve's door - so it seems like she will play a big part in the next movie.
What will A Minecraft Movie 2 be about?
Fans have been trying to guess if the first poster for the new movie has any clues to what it might be about
In the first movie, Steve, Garrett, Natalie and Dawn journeyed through the Overworld, and ended up in a big battle against the evil Piglin leader Malgosha and her army of warriors.
This time around fans are coming up with theories for what the second movie could be about.
We know that Alex will be a part of it, but eagle-eyed fans have shared that they think that enchantment or The End could feature in the new movie.
This is because on the teaser poster for the new movie, it shows two pickaxes glowing purple.
In the game Minecraft tools glow purple when they are enchanted.
Could the fearsome Ender Dragon make an appearance in the sequel?
Fans also think the gang could be headed to The End, a dark dimension which is home to spooky Endermen and the terrifyingly tough Ender Dragon boss.
However there is currently no official word from the makers on what the second movie will be about yet, so fans will have to wait to see if their theories are true.
