The Doctor arrived on Earth in a Type 40 Mk 1 Tardis from his home planet, Gallifrey. The ship's chameleon circuit masked it as a police box, common in 1960s London.

Famously bigger on the inside, the Tardis is also an unpredictable ship. The Doctor claims he stole it from a museum and doesn't really know how to fly it.

The most seen part of the Tardis is a futuristic-looking room containing the hexagonal main console, with a central "time rotor" component.

Other console rooms exist, such as this wood-panelled version from the fourth Doctor's era. A cloakroom, library, even a swimming pool are sometimes seen.

The console room reflected current design styles. The console in this image from 1986 is reminiscent of '80s computer technology. Note also the legwarmers.

The Tardis had a complete overhaul when the series returned in 2005 after a 16-year break. The clean lines of the original were swapped for a more organic-looking interior.
