Girls on the Bridge was sold at auction in New York on Monday

Girls on the Bridge, a painting by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, has sold for $54.5m (£43.9m) at auction.

It is the second-highest auction price paid for a work by Munch, the auction house, Sotheby's, confirmed.

The artist's most famous painting, The Scream, was his most expensive work of art to sell at auction, going for $119.9m in 2012.

Girls on the Bridge, which went under the hammer in New York on Monday, was painted in 1902.

It depicts women in colourful dresses which contrast with a darker and more anguished landscape.

Sotheby's had estimated the painting would sell for above $50 million.

Girls on the Bridge has broken records every time it has been put up for auction. It went for $7.7m (£6.2m) in 1997, and then sold for $30.8m (£24.8m) in 2008.
