Young, British Muslims have set up a tuition service to help underachieving children in the borough. Teachers from Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Newham tutor children free of charge.

Muslim children between the ages of 7 – 18 are taught core curriculum subjects by these volunteers.

Aabida Khan is a trainee solicitor and a volunteer at the Islamic Circles Supplementary School in Newham. She says she’s been tutoring teenagers who can’t read or write and believes the current school system is failing them.

A large percentage of Muslim youngsters are still underachieving across the country. Economic deprivation and the lack of support available at home are two of the reasons widely assumed.

The volunteers at ICSS hope to be seen as positive role models, inspiring and encouraging these East London children to reach their potential.
