Richard and John Smith at John O'Groats

Wheels of fortune

By Richard Smith
A Leicester father and son are doing a charity ride on a tandem bicycle from Land's End to John O'Groats. Richard and John Smith, aged 33 and 61, are aiming to cycle over 900 miles between 10-23 July. Read Richard's diary below:

Day 14

68 miles and 5 hours.
Total of 971 miles in the fortnight with 68 hours in the saddle, arriving in Land's End @ 17:30, after riding the last 3 hours in the pouring rain, including one last puncture and tyre blow-out. This totalled 8 punctures and 2 tyre blow-outs. We were met there by our support crew, Pauline and Sue, along with Pauline's sister (Barbara) and boyfriend (Gary) who were holidaying in Cornwall and came to cheer us to the finish as well.

Day 13

68 miles and 4.5 hours. From Mortonhampstead to Fowey, we changed the route to avoid Dartmoor and the hills sticking to the A-roads, much quicker and less painful. Reached our top speed today, just touching 50mph - pretty hairy!!! Fowey was beautiful and we enjoyed fish and chips on the quayside with a glass of local cider!

Day 12

65 miles and 5 hours. Bridgwater to Mortonhampstead - VERY hilly day, Exeter was no fun, some real steep climbs and v hot too, so much liquid (and ice-cream) taken on board.

Day 11

The support team meet Richard and John, Land's End
The support team meet Richard and John,

65 miles and 4 hours 40 mins. From Monmouth to Bridgwater. Great views as we came across the old Severn Bridge, struggled with sign post that had been turned round as we headed for Bristol. Hilly around Bristol. Came over the Clifton Suspension Bridge which was cool. Had evening meal at my boss' (Hi Andy/Liz!) house and a nice wind-down.

Day 10

Did 78 miles today. Have now covered 571 miles in total. Great day. Brother and family came out to meet up with us which was good. went into Manchester tonight to refuel at bar - after over 39 hours in the saddle.

Day 9

Much cooler today. rode 3-4 hours in the rain - miserable day! pressed on and did extra miles - 85 today, 360 in total now. had nice steak, chips and lager - and haggis to start!

Day 8

Did 75 miles today, bringing it to 435 in total. Have spent 30 hrs in the saddle - ouch! Just back into England now. Great day, wind with us so we can go very fast. Had look round Gretna Green, which was very interesting. Skirting the Lake District tomorrow. Feeling good.

Day 7

Started well, nice run down to Paisley, good view from bridge. Huge climb, weather grim. Rained after lunch, for 3 hours, got drenched! Great hotel, good meal and couple of beers.

Day 6

John has a well-deserved rest

Better day, nice and cool. Some great views. 78 miles. Did some extra miles as long days ahead. Nice picnic lunch break provided by my partner, Pauline Dams, and my mum Sue, who are following us in the car.

Day 5

Three punctures and a type blow out. Roasting hot. 71 miles. Saw seals, buzzards and a mole. Heavy day!

Day 4

Did 55 miles. Started dull sunny in end.

Day 3

Did another 72 miles today. Lovely views along Loch Ness. Could not resist cooling the feet off as you can see! 197 miles completed now - but some pain resulting in the saddle area! Great room at Fort William.

Days 1 & 2

Set off from John O'Groats in Scotland. We are doing the ride to raise money for Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and Oxfam. The idea is to cover 60 miles a day.
